Chaplains are essential.

Whether in a military or first responder unit or in a hospital or prison, chaplains are entrusted with the role of providing spiritual care in high-stress environments and bolstering resiliency in the face of life and death situations.

Both the scientific and medical communities acknowledge a spiritual component to developing resilience, but neither are able to address the need. The chaplain, however, is trained and trusted to provide spiritual care to members of faith and non-faith communities.

If chaplains are entrusted by the government to provide spiritual care in the secular and pluralistic environment that is the U.S. Armed Forces, surely they could add spiritual value to every city, community, and campus and help stem the tide of spiritual poverty in our nation.

May we chaplains be ready to do so.

Godspeed,
