Crossing the Line
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
Police officers are people, just like you and me. You may know one, have one in the family, or even be one. When the uniform is on, however, there is a line that cannot and should not be crossed: the line of duty.
Chaplains go where others cannot. They dare to cross lines, not for their own benefit, but in order to serve those that largely go underserved. In doing so, oftentimes the chaplain is found serving those who serve.
This past month, I had the opportunity to attend a training for prospective volunteer chaplains for the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). Led by Senior Chaplain Melissa Biegert, we enjoyed some home-baked treats and explored the unique challenges that officers face and their need for spiritual care.
As a capstone for the training, I accompanied Officer Anthony Torns on a ride along where we surveyed far-more-than-40-acres he serves and protects — even saving a Waymo vehicle from certain peril! During the ride, I heard his story, gleaned his perspective on life, and learned what it takes to get up everyday to do what he does.
I am proud of the man that he is and the caliber of individuals that are serving our campus, and I am grateful to add to the list of resources, like Ch Biegert, that are at his disposal to help him keep being the servant that he is, a true gift to our city, that we may live at peace with everyone, so far as it depends on us.
Godspeed,
Troy Robertson, Chaplain
Chapel Corps
